I was absent due to my mother's birthday but my partners remade the beeswax and coconut oil hair gel but this time added the orange oil we made. I wasn't there but they told me that it did change the smell but not by as much as we wanted it to. I think this is our final product for this project but this project was super fun we got to learn how to make hair gel with diapers and with beeswax, we got to use the ghetto extractor to make orange oil that smelled super good because there was a little bit of coconut oil left in from last year, we had some successes with the beeswax gel and fails with diapers but it was all fun.
This was when we made our orange extract with the makeshift extractor that JP made. we first chopped up our orange peels with scissors and got them all onto a plate. We then poured them into the bottle part of the extractor to fill it up almost half, once that was done we had to watch Andrew and JP do the rest because it would be so cold that it was dangerous, they crushed dry ice into powder and filled the rest the bottle up with that then sealed it and let it start to gain pressure. While it was gaining pressure it was so cold that Andrew got a little frozen to the bottle so we put it under warm water which also helped it gain pressure faster. once it was at 1000 psi we got it ready to extract. while we extracted the scent went all through the room making it smell delicious. The nozzle got clogged a lot but in the end we got a good amount of orange oil to work with.
I think the next step is to make our own scent and add it to the recipe maybe something like orange or something that would smell good on hair. Then we need to make a batch with the scent. Looking Back: What happened?
Starting this class I was really hyped for how we got to do what we wanted to do and it was easy to get our points as long as we do our own stuff. I got confused though when we did our first blog because we we're told not to make the regular normal lame post about what we learned and what is cool so I took that thinking into my other blog posts. This made me put less text because I was making the blog for just me and I could fully understand what i did with just a few words.
While playing with the dry ice we learned a lot of things like when you put it in water more gas comes out and the terrible sound it makes when you tough it to metal. I still have no idea why the metal makes such a terrible sound but I think it has something to do with how fast it changes temperature because in my research on a Prince Rupert's drop I found out that the change of the glass's temperature also makes a bad sound. After we saw other people poor soap in beakers we wanted to try making a big bubble so we put a layer of soap on the top and this happened, because the gas was trying to expand out of the bottle it made it and kept going until there was to much gas and it popped.Today we put a centimeter of dry ice into an empty balloon and watched the gas expand. It was crazy the ratio of solid to gas was 1:4228 cubic centimeters. Me and my group decided to see what would happen if we put a little bit of water in with the dry ice but it didn't expand more like we thought it would it just expanded faster.Initial Observations
I think it is weird to say either because it can feel like both but if I had to choose one I would say it is a liquid because even when you hit water really hard it feels like a solid but in ooblecks case you don't have to hit it too hard you just need to apply some pressure to it swiftly and it is solid. Tests after we played with it we tried doing some tests to help us figure out what it was, we found out that if you quickly got it all in your hand it was like a solid but the second it was in your hand it was liquid - I think this happens because once it is in your hand there is no longer pressure on it which loosens it to a liquid. I think that the reason it is a solid when you apply pressure is that you are condensing the liquid from being tight but still room to move around into so tight it cant move around. Conclusion It is a cool substance that is hard to define kinda like zero. plus "its a singularity"~noah |
